Two weeks ago it was a radical transition back to motion-picture, but on a cinema-video scale (the 5D Mk II with even a crappy mic, handled properly and photogenically, is an unprecedented creative tool), and I began to feel like the cheater to his true love — longing, guilt and a LONG time spent regaining trust (ok, so cameras are more forgiving than women, but it worked so well as a metaphor right up to the point it crashed).

I carry my camera everywhere. Sometimes it’s awkward, but I become a walking advertisement for my work. I’ve gained several clients just by chance meeting “so you’re a photographer…” Anyway, last week I went through a little boot camp and shot only monochrome; mainly during a brunch with the ever lovely Mandy. Why shoot B&W? Composition. Where motion picture deviates most from still is composition. There are so many tricks you can get away with in still (gallery above of last week’s practice, lots of examples of “getting away with things”). So back to normal street shots: Finally I kinda get why musicians practice scales.

Apparently you can, according to Bravado International Group Merchandising services, who, according to an e-mail I received from CafePress sent a notice to Bravado “stating that the use of Michael Jackson’s name, image or likeness infringes upon Bravado International Group Merchandising Services, Inc.’s intellectual property rights (copyright/trademark/right of publicity).” Whole issue was in response to the sale of a photograph I took (below). You can’t copyright or trademark a person, and I don’t believe Michael Jackson has publicity rights to his image post-mortem. This could very easily have been an image of a graffiti painting of a man in a hat. In public. Taken from the public streets. Personally, I understand that CafePress is in a tough spot and would rather tick off a couple of customers than face lengthy IP legislation. And I completely understand that MJ’s estate has signed a deal with Bravado – I imagine they’re very good at what they do. But COME ON! Third-party artist’s image, taken by a fourth-party as a newsworthy photograph… How can this possibly violate Bravado’s IP deal?
Long Live the King." width="500" height="332" />

P.S.: When I need a merchandising deal, I know exactly who I’m going with.

The only thing I did to this image (out of the ordinary) is push the exposure one stop just to get the light spilling onto the street; to burn it in. This image has me pretty much convinced that the Canon EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L USM is basically the best lens I’ve ever shot with. This is straight from the camera (ok, I added the border, duh). Crisp, soaked with color and just the right contrast. Follow the jump for more images from my 20-minute photo safari up Avenue A.

This is going in my personal faves collection – any photo with irony deserves a little notice. This one is filled with it.

This next image I shot inside of Key Bar on 13th between 1st and A. Go there. Atilla, the owner, shot all the artwork himself, and he’s a genius mixologist. Rumor has it Michel Gondry pops in from time to time. (Again, this is straight from the camera.)
