In the old days apartments just burned their trash, plane and simple. You’d throw your garbage down the shoot and into a whirlwind of flame. Now, only the brick reminds us that the incinerator, while the sign below mentions things you’d best avoid, er, incinerating.

Two weeks ago it was a radical transition back to motion-picture, but on a cinema-video scale (the 5D Mk II with even a crappy mic, handled properly and photogenically, is an unprecedented creative tool), and I began to feel like the cheater to his true love — longing, guilt and a LONG time spent regaining trust (ok, so cameras are more forgiving than women, but it worked so well as a metaphor right up to the point it crashed).

I carry my camera everywhere. Sometimes it’s awkward, but I become a walking advertisement for my work. I’ve gained several clients just by chance meeting “so you’re a photographer…” Anyway, last week I went through a little boot camp and shot only monochrome; mainly during a brunch with the ever lovely Mandy. Why shoot B&W? Composition. Where motion picture deviates most from still is composition. There are so many tricks you can get away with in still (gallery above of last week’s practice, lots of examples of “getting away with things”). So back to normal street shots: Finally I kinda get why musicians practice scales.

www.popularmechanics.com: Early in the morning of January 13th, news cameras began to roll, capturing the magnitude of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Little did the public know, nearly half a day earlier, senior military leadership was already huddled in an upstairs meeting room at US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), on the phone with the US Embassy in Haiti just an hour after the quake hit. Decisions were made as the quickly as the information could flow in, and within days of the disaster, the U.S. Military would have well over 10,000 people in the Haiti theater. As the mission expanded into Operation Unified Response, the US Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army became the backbone for almost all relief efforts into or out of Haiti, delivering more than 2.6 million bottles of water, 2.2 million food rations, 17 million pounds of food and 150,000 pounds of medical supplies. Behind those statistics: The largest logistical hat-trick in N. American History. These are the quiet heros, from airfields in Kansas to Marine Forward Operating Bases on the southern Haitian “claw.” These are the men and women who left home on no-notice deployment, some with fewer than eight hours to pack.

These are the combat air controllers who, in the first two weeks after the quake, landed and departed 4000 flights with nothing more than lawn chairs, binoculars and handheld radios. This is the sailor who said, aboard the USS Bataan, “Believe what you want to believe. We’re not here for the glory. We’re here to get our job done.”

For Haiti, that job is far from over. 13,000 US servicemen and women are still hard at work in Haiti and among the 19 ships offshore. The future for Haiti is still uncertain, and the country is just now clearing away the rest of the rubble. These are stories of how Haiti survived. —Benjamin Chertoff

Sean Penn has every reason to be pissed at his critics. When I talked to him in Haiti (I was embedded with the 1st-73rd Airborne Cav, 2 Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne out at FOB Grey, in an abandoned country club - story and images here) he was tired, sweaty, in the middle of juggling several satellite phone calls as he tried to get generators down to the disaster response team down the hill. His camp was sprawling; two entire tennis courts. His room and board in Haiti? A tent, smaller than most families take to go camping. The rest of the space on the courts was reserved for humanitarian supplies he'd had flown in and was working with the Army to distribute.

Nonetheless, at the conclusion of the meetings he’d often grab a seat at a table just to the right of where I’d set up my mobile office and continue to talk logistics with various NGOs. Here’s the typical banter: “We need 10, 4000 watt generators,” says one of the volunteers at the FEMA DMAT medical tent. “Worst case, 20 2500 watt units.” Oscar, Penn’s right-hand man in the Haiti effort, thinks, leans back, scratches his beard and then erupts with talk about logistics, to both the FEMA guy and Penn, who’s still sitting, diligently taking notes on a pad of paper as quickly as he can keep up with the conversation. “We could get them in through the DR,” Oscar says, tapping Penn on the shoulder to get his attention. Penn keeps writing, while confirming to the FEMA DMAT volunteer across the table “10, 4000 watts, right?” Penn says.
This was more than a month ago in, late January, when few knew of Penn’s presence. That’s how he wanted it. He enforced a strict ban on photography inside his camp radius, and when I talked about a photo op later on for a story I was hoping to pitch to a magazine back in the states, he wavered. “Listen,” he says, looking up at me sternly, “Right now, I’m down here because I can help, and I have a job to do, and I need to get it done. Right now, press is just going to keep me from doing that.” I feel suddenly sheepish, among the endless boxes of aid he helped bring in. I said I’d be happy to honor his request. Then his tone lightened and he cracked a smile, tapped me on the shoulder and says “listen man, I’m sorry I’m being a jerk about this, when I get back I want all the press I can get to help raise money.” I nodded, in that disappointed but understanding reporter way of nodding as he lit a cigarette I’d offered him, “I’m just here to get a job done, and I need people to understand that.”
